Dreaming of Camping at Rabbit Blanket Lake

We just finished booking all of our camping for this year, and I’m truly looking forward to getting back to our favourite places, while exploring a few new ones! Rabbit Blanket Lake is a beautiful spot to unwind and dream, with its picture-perfect lake set among the hills of Lake Superior Park, just south of Wawa. We don’t manage to get there every year, yet each time we do, it’s a magical experience. Morning mists often roll in, creeping over the water to first hide, then gradually reveal, crystal reflections of trees, rocks & sky.

I often slip into my kayak while my family is still asleep, eager to glide over the mirrored surface of the lake. With cheerful notes of chickadees and white-throated sparrows to accompany my morning escape, I paddle, almost silently, to the reed-hidden entrance of South Old Woman River, where the curved tops of Peat Mountain form a spectacular backdrop to the lush greens of the marshy river. Over our years visiting Rabbit Blanket, we’ve spied muskrats, beavers, bitterns, herons, loons and even otters during our paddles on the river and lake.

Rabbit Blanket Lake is all about reflections!! Both those you see, and those you feel in your heart.

The Peat Lake Trail, accessible directly from the Rabbit Blanket Lake campground, takes you through shade-dappled forests sprinkled with grand old white pines, leading you gradually upwards to a view far above the lake and the serpentine path of South Old Woman River.

Lake Superior Park is a treasure trove of natural wonder: beautiful beaches, coastal and hill hikes, wide sparkling lakes to canoe or kayak!! You’ll also find cultural history, exploring pictographs at Agawa Rock, or learning about the many shipwrecks that dot the park’s coastline, while visiting the Visitors Centre at Agawa Bay.

Nokomis’ profile at Old Woman Bay

Rabbit Blanket Lake will always hold a special place in my heart, holding so many happy summer memories for me and my family. Working its mysterious magic on me, it even inspired a family tale I wrote for More Campfire Stories! I’m counting down the days until I can return, browsing photo memories to keep me going until then!!

This peaceful corner of Lake Superior Park makes a fabulous alternative to the more popular – and much busier – Agawa Bay campground. If you like a quiet spot where you can rest and reflect, and still have access to all the magnificent hikes, paddles and amazing vistas of the park, Rabbit Blanket is for you!
