𝙄𝙨 𝘼𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙀𝙡𝙨𝙚 𝙐𝙥𝙨𝙚𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙇𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙖𝙨𝙝𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙨?

As most of you likely know, on December 13, Instagram (Meta) will be making hashtags obsolete as a way of reaching new audiences. When I joined Instagram, as an author hoping to reach book lovers, we were told hashtags were an essential way to help people understand and find your work. It took me a while to get the hang of them. Yet once I did, I loved that I made contacts with other authors, artists and readers around the world. I found followers and new accounts to follow. People who shared some of my interests, or showed me the beauty of other places and cultures.

Now we're being told that hashtags aren't working. That "businesses" will get better results by using keywords and captions. (Aren't HASHTAGS essentially KEYWORDS, anyway?) This may be true for big and "bigger" businesses--indeed, most of what I'm currently seeing on my Instagram feed is paid-for adverts by commercial companies! But for artists, authors, and very small businesses, removing the use of hashtags to connect removes our ability to reach broader audiences. Essentially, Instagram (Meta) is favouring buisnesses with big budgets, and trying to force small ones into paying for ads.

We celebrated another at home birthday for Eric la

We celebrated another at home birthday for Eric last week—Happy Birthday, Eric!🎂🥳 So nice to have him in Thunder Bay for the last couple of years! To honour his birthday week, we played a couple of board games together, something we usually only find time to do while camping or during Christmas holidays. We have many great games, so it’s fun to pull them out, dust them off, and try them out again! We got this one, Switch and Signal, a couple of years ago, and I’d forgotten how much I like it. Bearing a slight resemblance to Ticket to Ride, what’s fun about Switch and Signal is that it’s cooperative, but not necessarily easy to win. (We lost this round, running out of departure cards before getting all our shipments delivered).

We’ve forgotten exactly where we found Switch and Signal, but if you’re looking for it as a holiday gift, I know it can be found in Thunder Bay at Toy Sense @toysensetbay .

The other game we played during Eric’s birthday week was Munchkin Gloom. First time, so I’ll wait until our next try to share our thoughts. I will say it takes some convoluted strategy!😄
